Spirent Communications Turns to NetBotz® To Protect Network, Equipment Against Physical Threats

AUSTIN, Texas- December 18, 2002 - NetBotz®, Inc., the leading global provider of IP-based intelligent physical security solutions, today announced that Spirent Communications (NYSE: SPM and LSE:SPT) has chosen NetBotz to protect its IT infrastructure against physical threats. These range from human error and intrusion to a host of environmental factors such as inadequate airflow, extreme temperatures, high humidity, water damage, amperage fluctuations and more.

The NetBotz Intelligent Monitoring Solution consists of Intelligent Monitoring Appliances with built-in environmental sensors and an integrated color camera that can capture and store motion events; Centralized Management and Monitoring; as well as Add-On hardware (sensors) and software. Because it's a fully scalable solution, users can deploy just monitoring appliances and get great value out of the solution. At any time, users can add centralized management as well as a variety of Add-On Hardware and Software options.

Spirent Communications is a worldwide provider of integrated performance analysis and service assurance systems for next-generation network technologies. Tom Sommer, who helps build and support Spirent's global network and oversees network management for a number of his division's global sites, said NetBotz appealed to him for several reasons.

"For several years before I purchased NetBotz, I had been thinking how nice it would be to monitor the environment in our datacenter," said Sommer. "Environmental conditions were a threat to our network. But there was nothing that fit my specifications, including not taking up a network slot. When I saw a product review for NetBotz, I couldn't believe my eyes. Finally, I saw there was a flexible solution to the problem of monitoring physical conditions."

The company has installed a NetBotz Monitoring Appliance in each computer room and major Intermediate Distribution Facility (IDF). In addition to Sommer, IT and Facilities personnel also use NetBotz to monitor conditions that affect their equipment and spaces.

According to Sommer, NetBotz has saved the day on several occasions. In one instance, the UPS in their computer room starting beeping when it went on battery. NetBotz picked up that beep and alerted Sommer, quickly, before a calamity could strike. "Nothing happened because the NetBotz monitoring appliance warned us. But if we hadn't heard the beep, our UPS could've gone down."

On another occasion during the summer, an additional air conditioning unit was installed in Spirent's main computer room to ensure that the room maintained a constant low temperature. But, said Sommer, "The condensation didn't drain out of this unit to a drain in the back room." This meant that, periodically, the unit's condensation tank filled up. Consequently, the unit would turn off, and the temperature in the room would rise. Fortunately, said Sommer, "NetBotz prevented disaster by alerting us to this condition. We run Siebel and JP Edwards software on those servers, so it was a good thing we had NetBotz."
