St. Louis College of Pharmacy Selects NetBotz to Monitor its
IT Infrastructure
College One of More than 125 Academic Institutions Using NetBotz
AUSTIN, Texas- November 26, 2002 - NetBotz®, Inc., the leading global provider of IP-based intelligent physical security solutions, today announced that the St. Louis College of Pharmacy is now using NetBotz to protect its IT infrastructure. Such threats include human error and intrusion as well as a host of environmental factors such as inadequate airflow, extreme temperatures, high humidity, water damage, amperage fluctuations and more.
The NetBotz Intelligent Monitoring Solution consists of Intelligent Monitoring Appliances with built-in environmental sensors and an integrated color camera that can capture and store motion events; Centralized Management and Monitoring; as well as Add-On hardware (sensors) and software. A fully scalable solution, users can deploy just monitoring appliances and get great value out of the solution. At any time, users can add centralized management as well as a variety of Add-On Hardware and Software options.
The St. Louis-based academic institution has purchased a number of NetBotz Monitoring appliances as well as external fluid, temperature and amp detectors to protect the distributed rooms that house their networking and telecommunications infrastructures as well as their computer laboratory. High availability is the hallmark of the service the College's Information Technology group provides.
"Monitoring environmentals is critical to high availability," said Chad Shepherd, vice president of information technology as well as CIO. And so is securing assets.
"Our computer rooms are stocked with laptops," said Shepherd. "Those tend to sprout legs. We have a NetBotz pointed at the door to prevent those laptops from walking out."
The oldest college of pharmacy west of the Mississippi River, the St. Louis College of Pharmacy boasts that more than 90 percent of the pharmacists in the St. Louis area are its graduates. Currently, some 900 students attend the school.
The decision to go with NetBotz was a mixture of need and happenstance. Need came in the form of a near disaster. "We knew we needed to deploy a physical security technology, but other alternatives were a lot more expensive," said Shepherd. "We had just averted a serious situation. Someone had turned the air conditioning off in our computer room to avoid getting constantly hit with a blast of cold air. Unfortunately, he had forgotten to turn it back on when he left the room. Luckily, however, someone else walked in at about the time the temperature hit 95 degrees. If that hadn't happened, the situation would've worsened over the night. It would have been a disaster."
Happenstance took a more traditional form. "We received some information about NetBotz at the same time we were looking for a physical security monitoring solution. Until then, I didn't know that such an affordable, well-featured solution existed."
Interestingly, Shepherd initially wasn't that interested in the integrated camera that each NetBotz appliance contains. "I thought it was a nice to have, not a must have," he said. "Now, however, we realize the value of having the camera. For example, when I get an alert from the appliance about an environmental threshold that's being violated, I pull up a web page to see exactly what's happened. With a view into the room that's being monitored, I can see exactly what kind of corrective action I need to take."
Since deploying NetBotz, the College has averted a number of disasters. "The equipment in one of our intermediate distribution frames overheated. NetBotz alerted us in time to take appropriate action. Also, we lost the air conditioning in our computer room again. Within a very short time, the NetBotz Appliance caught the trend of escalating temperatures and alerted us, thereby avoiding another disaster. NetBotz saved half a million dollars worth of equipment in there."
Future plans call for Shepherd to purchase a NetBotz appliance for every communications closet on campus. "NetBotz fits in nicely with our approach to high availability," said Shepherd.
