Arch Chemicals Chooses NetBotz to Monitor Worldwide IT Infrastructure Against Physical Threats
Leading Manufacturer of Specialty Chemicals Looks to NetBotz to Alert Against Variety of Physical Factors
AUSTIN, Texas- November 14, 2002 - NetBotz®, Inc., the leading global provider of IP-based intelligent physical security solutions, today announced that Arch Chemicals, Inc., (NYSE: ARJ) is now using NetBotz to protect its IT infrastructure from physical threats that could jeopardize operations. Such threats include human error and intrusion as well as a host of environmental factors such as inadequate airflow, extreme temperatures, high humidity, water damage, amperage fluctuations and more.
Based in Norwalk, Connecticut, Arch is a leading global provider of specialty chemicals used in specific industrial and commercial applications, including hydrazine propellants for the Space Shuttle and satellites; HTH® swimming pool sanitizers; zinc Omadine® biocides, the world's leading active antidandruff agent; Wolmanized® Natural Select organic wood preservative; and a whole range of microelectronic materials.
With offices in some 27 countries, Arch has a distributed IT infrastructure across the globe. The company has 12 US, 10 European, two South American and two Asia Pacific IT sites. All sites have a server room, WAN connectivity hardware, and a telecommunications equipment room. None of the sites, however, have 24/7 onsite personnel managing and monitoring the equipment.
Currently, NetBotz is monitoring all Arch sites in the US as well as one in Europe. The company is in the process of implementing NetBotz at all worldwide sites. In addition to the NetBotz monitoring appliances already in use, Arch has purchased a number of external sensors that monitor humidity, external temperature and the presence of fluid. Their next purchase will likely be NetBotz Central, sever-based centralized monitoring and management software solution.
"We needed a solution that could monitor our sites and provide us with the critical information we needed about the physical and environmental factors that could affect the uptime and availability of our systems at our remote sites," said Ray Baumann, manager, data center operations and worldwide help desk support for Arch. "We already had network management software in place monitoring the connectivity and applications so we needed something to monitor the physical security of our IT assets. NetBotz complements this by providing information about the physical threats to our server rooms."
Arch first thought about implementing a physical monitoring solution when it acquired a site in New Jersey. The server room had specific environmental issues that could threaten the equipment and infrastructure.
"We purchased NetBotz for that site, to see if it provided the physical data and alerting we needed. Once we saw that it did that, it led to our implementing NetBotz at other sites," Baumann said.
"We're currently looking into other areas in which NetBotz can help play a key role, including deploying them in warehouses and manufacturing sites."
Right now, NetBotz is already actively involved in safeguarding the company's server rooms. "Those rooms are the central piece of our IT infrastructure," said Baumann. "All our company data reside there. We also turn to NetBotz for 'entry control,' supplementing the existing card and key entry control security in place."
"Before we implemented NetBotz, we ran into environmental problems at a remote site that created equipment issues and threatened our system availability," said Baumann. "We experienced air conditioning outages at a few unmanned locations resulting in the server room temperature rising close to 90 degrees. This damaged our equipment. Now with NetBotz's ability to send us alerts about environmental conditions, we've got a safety net helping to prevent this kind of situation."
