FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NetBotz® Extends "X-Ray" Monitoring To Majority of Leading Network Hardware Devices
Advanced Device Crawlers Software Now Measures Internal Vitals of Equipment from IBM, Sun and others
AUSTIN, Texas- October 8, 2002 - NetBotz, Inc., the leading global provider of intelligent physical monitoring solutions, today announced it has extended support of its patent-pending Advanced Device Crawlers software to an additional group of leading network hardware platforms, including those from IBM, Sun, Foundry Networks, Juniper Networks, Avaya, Alcatel, Best Power and Liebert. Advanced Device Crawlers already monitors the internal vitals-the physical microenvironment-of network devices from Dell, HP, Cisco, APC and Extreme Networks, among others.
Advanced Device Crawlers is the first monitoring technology to give IT professionals painless and secure cross-platform access to information about the physical micro environment-the internal vitals-within their network devices. These data, which include information such as CPU temperature, fan speed and power supply status, are found in a vendor's extended SNMP Management Information Base or MIB.
The problem of unmonitored chip temperatures, voltages and fan speeds is a significant cause of network downtime. And the more IT equipment an organization has, the greater the chance of a problem arising. Getting to the information found in vendors' MIBs has been a time-consuming task, magnified by the number of different vendor devices from which a user needed to extract this environmental information.
An efficient, reliable approach to monitoring, Advanced Device Crawlers confines SNMP traffic to an organization's LAN. The NetBotz appliance hosting the software sends alerts about a device's internals via email, HTTP or FTP over the TCP/IP protocol using standard ports.
"We have close to 1,500 customers, which multiplies the variety of network devices our monitoring solution needs to protect," said Mitch Medford, NetBotz vice president, product development. "By providing Advanced Device Crawler support for a broader range of network devices, we're meeting our customers' needs for more secure, more available environments."
NetBotz also announced today that the latest versions of its client software for both NetBotz monitoring appliances and NetBotz Central now run on Linux and Solaris operating systems. Supported versions include Red Hat Linux 7.1 and newer; and Solaris 8, Sparc or Intel with all Sun-recommended patches installed.
About Advanced Device Crawlers
Advanced Device Crawlers can monitor physical characteristics of up to 48 network devices. The innovative NetBotz software automatically extracts desired data objects from proprietary extended MIBs and then formats them into NetBotz Device Definition Files (DDFs), which are used by Advanced Device Crawlers to monitor information.
Each DDF includes "pre-mapped" physical objects. These include, for example, battery run time remaining for a UPS or CPU temperature for a server; fan speed/status; power supply status and more. There is a DDF for each vendor or device class combination supported.
When a threshold set by a user for an object on a target device goes outside of "normal" range or is different than a normal operating state, Advanced Device Crawlers sends alerts to designated email and SNMP traps that integrate the information into a customer's network management system.
