Ohio State's MicroMD Laboratory Deploys NetBotz
Country's 1st Technologically Integrated Facility for Developing Biomedical Microsystems and Nanotechnology Now Has Central View into Physical Environment

AUSTIN, Texas- February 26, 2003 - NetBotz®, Inc., the leading global provider of IP-based intelligent physical security solutions, today announced The Ohio State University's prestigious MicroMD Laboratory is now using NetBotz to monitor the physical factors that can disrupt the smooth operations of the facility and ensure the safety of the materials, equipment and personnel working in the laboratory.

Open just a year, the lab serves both the corporate and academic research communities by providing multiple microfabrication process lines with biochemical wet lab space. Containing four cleanroom work bays with more than 6,000 square feet of Class 100 clean space and a 4,500 square foot biohybrid lab, the site aids in the development of microsystems and nanotechnology devices and materials, particularly for biomedical applications (BioMEMS). BioMEMS are very small medical devices with features typically between one-millionth and one-billionth of an inch or smaller.

According to Shana Underberger, the Laboratory's Manager of Information Systems, safety is a key consideration at the site, especially since lab personnel work an assortment of chemical-based projects.

"Security and safety are critical to our operations. We have a number of isolated areas within the lab. It's critical that we have an eye on all these places to make sure everything's okay. Having the visual information about what's going on is a part of how we constantly improve our processes."

"If something does go wrong, we're able to review the images that are captured. That helps us correct the situation quickly because we can see the source of the problem."

Underberger adds that her group is looking to eventually integrate the environmental information captured by sensors on the monitoring appliance with their current building monitoring system. "This will give us even more control about what's going on with all our systems throughout the lab," she added.
