NetBotz Expands Beyond Physical Security Monitoring Into Active Physical Security Management
Customers Can Now Take Immediate Action to Resolve Problems Caused by Physical Threats
AUSTIN, Texas - February 24, 2004 - NetBotz®, Inc., the global leader in IP-based intelligent physical security solutions, and winner of the Deloitte & Touch Rising Star Award, today announced that it has added active management capabilities to its award-winning NetBotz 500 physical security monitoring solution. This means that, using a NetBotz 500, a customer can now remotely turn on/off power to devices (such as servers, routers and more) and switches (for lights, doors and more) if physical conditions warrant. The solution is available now.
This output control capability enables customers to better manage and to protect their infrastructure and other assets from physical threats. For example, after alerting a customer that their data center is starting to overheat, the NetBotz 500 can then be instructed to turn on a backup air conditioner as well as to shut down, and then later, restart the servers. Taking such action protects equipment until the room temperature returns to acceptable levels.
Or the output control capability can act like remote "sentry," tripping an action that can prevent mischief or malfeasance. For example, remotely viewing the room live through the NetBotz camera, a NetBotz user notices someone entering an authorized-only room. The user can then remotely set off flashing lights, for example, or even lock the person in the room-if that person in there is deemed to be an intruder.
Because the NetBotz enables customers to set extremely fine-tuned alarm thresholds that trigger alerts, the early warning to customers combines with the appliance's ability to take immediate action based on these alerts, even over far distances. This double protection means customer sites are safer than ever from physical threats.
"Output Control is the number one capability that our customers have been asking for," said Mitch Medford, NetBotz CTO. "That makes perfect sense, considering the critical, distributed IT assets they manage are in remote sites and difficult to get to if something goes awry. Having the ability to remotely and even automatically take an action that can save an asset can spell the difference between an up and running organization and a 'down' one."
More than 2,500 organizations use NetBotz to protect their people, distributed places and assets from a wide range of physical threats: hostile environmental conditions, toxic gases and dangerous ambient conditions as well as malicious human acts. The NetBotz solution consists of powerful IP-based physical security appliances that capture physical threat data from integrated sensors and SSL encrypted cameras and alert when danger threatens; central management that can mass configure and manage an organization's company-wide NetBotz deployment, giving viewers a company-wide view of their physical security status; as well as add on sensors and software that increase the functionality of the solution.
NetBotz Output Control Options: Relay Out and Remote Power Switching
NetBotz provides two types of output control:
- NetBotz Relay Out capability controls a variety of small devices such as door locks, light switches and flashing lights. This involves a 16-port, output relay pod connected by USB cable to the NetBotz 500. Using USB hubs, up to 16 relay modules can connect to a single NetBotz 500. If users prefer, relay output actions can be configured as an automatic alert action in response to a threshold event.
- Remote Power Switching enables remote power switching and rebooting for 115 or 230 VAC powered equipment such as servers, routers and hubs. The solution connects a power control pod (which manages one AC power outlet) to the NetBotz via a USB-serial converter cable, with up to 10 "satellite" modules potentially attached to each master unit.
Users can set a schedule for automatic execution of actions-such as turning on lights in a reception area after personnel have gone for the day. Moreover, they can create "button actions." This enables the user to press a digital button that allows a certain action to continue for a set period of time. For example, a user can easily create a button on Advanced View that, when clicked on, will open a door lock for a specified number of seconds. Customers can set up access lists for each output relay or plug so only designated users can execute these functions.
